“Law, miss! I canno’ pin yer hair when ye keep shiftin’ like that.”

“I’m sorry. I just cannot seem to sit still this morning.” Mary looked at her reflection in the mirror, noting how good the new neckline looked. It wasn’t too low—Abigail’s was much lower—but it was low enough to command attention. She shifted to one side to get a different look and Abigail sighed.

“Aye, ye’re as restless as a hunk of bacon fat in a hot pan.”

Mary wrinkled her nose. “Where do you get your sayings?”

“From me grammer, miss.”

“Your grammer?”

“Aye, me mother’s mother.”

“Ah, your grandmother. We call our grandmother ‘Mam.’ They say she’s a witch.” At Abigail’s alarmed look, Mary added hastily, “She’s not, although our family history is filled with stories of white witches. My brother’s especially fond of one story, that of an amber amulet. It’s rumored to be magical in some way and—”

Abigail squeaked. “Magical, miss?”

Mary chuckled at the maid’s excitement. “It’s rumored to be magical, Abigail. Pay attention!”

The maid’s face fell. “Ye don’t believe it?”

“Oh, no. It’s family lore; you know how that is.”

Oddly, Mary had dreamed of the amber amulet last night. She’d slept restlessly, nervous and excited about the coming day, and yet her dream had been so vivid. In it, after years of searching distant lands, Michael had returned home with the amulet. She’d been coming down the stairs of the vicarage and he’d grinned up at her, so much like the last time she’d seen him that her heart ached, even in her sleep. He’d then held up the amulet. “Mary, I found it!”

The amulet had gleamed, catching the bright rays of the morning sun, and she hadn’t been able to take her eyes off of it. Suddenly she was no longer at the top of the stairs, but at the bottom, the amulet in her hands. Michael was talking to Father and Mother, his deep voice excited as he told how he’d found it. Mary didn’t hear most of it, for her attention was on the amulet in her hands. Framed in heavy silver, deeply etched, the amulet was warm to the touch. As she’d stared deeply into the amber, the voices had faded and she saw swirls of mists rising through the gem. In the mist, she’d seen Erroll standing before a washbasin with no shirt, carefully shaving around the scars on his jaw and neck. She’d peered closer, noting the ridges of scars that ran from his jaw down his neck, over his shoulder and halfway down one arm; then her gaze had moved on to his muscular chest and his powerful arms. He was beautiful. In her sleep, she’d murmured that and he’d turned as if he could hear her, his gaze searching the room.

Suddenly fearful that she’d been seen, she’d dropped the amulet… and had woken up, her heart beating a thousand times a minute.

Thank goodness it was only a dream. Yet I wonder about the earl’s scars more than ever now.

It had been an odd
